Welcome to the Cloud Wars Minute — your daily cloud news and commentary show. Each episode provides insights and perspectives around the “reimagination machine” that is the cloud.

In today’s Cloud Wars Minute, I dive into Microsoft’s new initiative to rank AI models by safety, empowering Azure developers to make smarter, more responsible choices.

Highlights

00:07 — Microsoft is set to launch a ranking system for AI models based on their safety. This new system will benefit Microsoft’s Cloud customers using its Azure AI Foundry developer platform. Now, the safety ranking will be incorporated into Microsoft’s model leaderboard, which was launched last month and aims to streamline model selection for developers.

00:34 — While the model leaderboard already has the potential to influence the adoption of certain models available through Microsoft, it currently demonstrates how well models fit specific purposes across clearly defined metrics. The addition of a safety ranking is a significant development, with customers focusing not only on performance but also on the overall safety of AI in general.

AI Agent & Copilot Summit is an AI-first event to define opportunities, impact, and outcomes with Microsoft Copilot and agents. Building on its 2025 success, the 2026 event takes place March 17-19 in San Diego. Get more details.

01:24 — From Microsoft’s perspective, it’s openly sharing its understanding of the models accessible to its developers. Developers, in turn, can be transparent about their model selection process and the rationale behind choosing a specific model over another, even if it ranks lower on the safety scale.

01:44 — This way, customers can make informed decisions by understanding how these conclusions were reached. It’s a very interesting progression that will undoubtedly be adopted elsewhere.
